How to Spend 24 Hours in NYC with Your Dog

There’s nothing better than a day dedicated entirely to your pup — and in New York City, there’s no shortage of places where dogs are treated like VIPs. One of my favorite things to do with Mia is what I call a "Mia Day" — a day where she leads the way, choosing where we walk, what shops we visit, and which sunny park benches we claim for our lounging breaks. These days are about slowing down, savoring the city, and making sure our pups feel just as loved and pampered as they deserve.

So whether you’re visiting for the weekend or you’re a local New Yorker looking to treat your pup, here’s a 24-hour NYC itinerary perfect for your dog — inspired by Mia’s favorite spots.

8:00 AM — Morning Walk Around the Neighborhood

Start your day with a gentle stroll through your neighborhood or wherever you’re staying. NYC mornings are magic — quiet streets, early light, and friendly neighbors walking their own pups. Let your dog sniff every hydrant, corner, and stoop.

Pro tip: Let your pup set the pace. Mia loves stopping at every stoop for a sniff, and honestly, it's the best way to discover hidden gems in the city.

9:00 AM — Coffee at Butler Bake Shop

No NYC pup day is complete without a coffee run. Butler Bake Shop is our go-to. Not only do they serve excellent coffee and pastries, but the staff love dogs. Mia practically drags me there, knowing there are cuddles and treats waiting.

Locations to visit:

  • 95 South 5th St, Williamsburg

  • 40 Water St, DUMBO

  • 177 Lafayette St, Soho

Dog-Friendly Perks: Outdoor seating, treats behind the counter, endless staff belly rubs.

10:00 AM — Park Time at Washington Square Park or Central Park

After fueling up, it’s time for play. If you’re downtown, head to Washington Square Park — there’s a fantastic dog run and plenty of grassy spots to lounge. Or if you’re uptown, Central Park is always a delight. Be sure to bring a sweater for your pup if it's not summer!

Pro tip: Grab a bagel or croissant from a nearby deli (Murray’s Bagels in Greenwich Village or Sant Ambroeus Coffee Bar on the Upper East Side) and enjoy some people- and pup-watching while your dog socializes.

12:00 PM — Boutiques & Window Shopping

Mia loves stopping by dog-friendly boutiques — and let’s be honest, it’s because they usually have a treat jar.

Our Favorite Stops:

  • Love Thy Beast (Pet accessories + treat jar)

  • McNally Jackson Books (Yes, dogs allowed!)

  • Everlane & Aesop (Super dog-friendly with kind staff and water bowls)

Let your dog be the tour guide. Mia loves leading me down her favorite blocks, and half the fun is seeing which doorway she pauses at.

1:30 PM — Lunch at Boris & Horton

Treat yourself and your pup to a leisurely lunch at Boris & Horton in the East Village. This local dog-favorite spot is a great place to either go for coffee and a light snack, or for brunch/light lunch and wine as they serve delicious menu items like eggs Benedict and homemade hummus. Boris & Horton is made for dogs first, then people, so you know your pup will be well taken care of-- and may even make a new fluffy friend of two!

Dog-Friendly Perks: This cafe is made for dogs, so there's a full dog menu and plenty of friends for your furry soulmate. They occasionally dog events such as Barkgammon night and Fiesta Furriday. Just check their Instagram for updates so you and your pup can join in on the fun.

3:00 PM — Stroll Through SoHo or Williamsburg

After lunch, take a meandering stroll through SoHo or Williamsburg. Both neighborhoods are packed with dog-friendly shops, murals for cute photo ops, and wide sidewalks perfect for aimless exploring.

Bonus: In SoHo, stop by Charlie’s Dog Run on Grand St. for a quick off-leash session.

5:00 PM — Ice Cream Break

Yes — there’s dog-friendly ice cream in NYC! Van Leeuwen offers pup cups at select locations, or grab some dog gelato from LICK (a local pup ice cream brand available at pet shops around the city).

6:00 PM — Sunset at Domino Park or Brooklyn Bridge Park

End your perfect day with a sunset view from Brooklyn. Domino Park in Williamsburg has stunning skyline views and a dedicated dog run. This is our go-to park with Mia, as Williamsburg is our home. Another option is to go to DUMBO and head the the park beneath the bridge. Either way, sit by the water, let your pup chase a ball, and savor the best kind of New York moment — sunset with your furry best friend.

8:00 PM — Cozy Night In

After a full day of treats, walks, and adventures, it’s time to head home, cuddle up, and order takeout. Mia’s favorite is when we curl up together with a pizza (for me) and some apple with peanut butter (for her) while we wind down with a movie.

Craft Your Own “Mia Day”

These Mia Days have become some of my favorite traditions — a reminder to slow down and let your dog lead the way. Our pups bring us so much joy; they deserve days where everything is about them. So whether you live in NYC or are just visiting, treat your pup to their perfect city day. You’ll both be better for it.
